Performing artists have been exploring methods of production

that acknowledge proximity to the work of other artists, past and present. As artistic methods, reenactment, reconstruction and appropriation raise questions of origin, ownership, legacy and originality, but also power structures within artistic fields and culture in general. The tension this can create is perhaps most evident when forms and practices rooted in specific heritages are used uncritically without acknowledgement or dialogue. Even within what is assumed to be a shared artistic heritage, there are differing views and ways of dealing with existing works, practices and histories. How can we navigate this complex terrain?

This Roundtable & Debate is a companion to the critics’ salon on dance and history at CODA dance festival October 20th in Bærum Kulturhus 17.00 – 18.30. Read more
